"Most of my friends were graffiti artists. I wasnt very good with a spray can so i picked up a camera. I didnt really know what my purpose was; i just had to photograph my friends and their great sense of style. They were honoured to be documented. I was the only one with a camera who wasnt a tourist. All the teenagers posed for me, I was legitimate to them. "

Jamel Shabbaz, photographer.

Shabbaz is publishing next fall a reissue of his book "Back in the days" very special for the 10th year anniversary edition of the original book. Check more of his pics portraiting the early 80´s hip hop-graffiti scene from bronx+brooklyn, ny here

we love: the double covers of zeit magazin

Photobucket
explaining visually the contents of magazines and newspapers comes from the graphical edition. Which images are chosen by printed media to illustrate their reportages/information? It happens that sometimes you have two very good images that could illustrate the text, both of them valid, so why not using them both?
this is sort of the idea that die zeit magazin follows now on their
"double covers".
You get on the first page one cover for the magazine, and on the 3rd page, you find the second cover.
The first example is based on a reportage on how lifestyle works against being a mother in a most traditional way. Or how modern paternity involves also sadness.
They create two covers. The first one states: we love our children
the second one: but we hate our lives.
this conflict is visually presented to portrait motherhood nowadays, and works even when i fell that hate- hassen- sounds way too extreme to illustrate this feeling on the second cover.
Photobucket
This second example illustrate a reportage about the german historical memory .On the first cover is written: was greatgranfather a nazi? On the second cover: and is that my problem? Both images and covers serve to illustrate a reportage about the perspective of the younger german generation over the nazis or the hollocaust question, quite a delicate thema.
i love this graphical proposal for a national newspaper, -die zeit is in germany after the suddeutsche zeitung one of the main read national newspapers-,
i love their graphical and art direction. they are excellent!

Miroslav Tichý is a photographer born in Czechoslovakia in 1926, who builds his own photo cameras and pinholes and is also a painter. In late 1950 he stopped painting and started taking photographs of women during his daily walks. He mounted the prints on handmade frames and added touches on pencil. In 2004 he had his first solo exhibition and his work was also shown in museums. He doesnt go to the openings of his shows and he still lives in Kyjov. His life has not changed much.

"I never did anything but pass the time. I went to town and had to do something. So i was simply pressing the release. I´d use 3 rolls of film a day. One hundred fotos a day. That happened automatically without any effort of my part. I didnt determine anything. The time i spent on my walk determined what i would photograph".

I would love to meet him.

washed out snow from my window/luz de invierno

Photobucket
white hibernal light, is meant to be so bright like the sun but it isnt. this is how the winter shines in nothern europe, with the white density that reflects at nite in the fields covered with snow of the englischer garten and the ganses sleeping like 3D's black points of dirt hangin out in the middle of a huge sort of fluorescent white field at eleven at nite when we come back home and we preffer the wald/forrest as the city. we love to walk in the forrest of the englischer garten coming back home. stepping on the snow, with the noises and the views, for me still so exotic and really deep i dont think i will be able to handle a winter without the snow anymore.
is so beautiful.
calmes everything.
bright light of the white reflecting surface at nite, thats something i cant get tired of. it makes me feel like gretel. detlef could therefore be hansel.
but no witch around bothering the nice walk going back home. zum glück.
